This placement would suit... anyone with an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to learn!

As China opens its doors to foreign investment, the pressure to learn English has never been greater. Learning English is the key to a better job. Many Chinese would like to study abroad, but they can't. Despite recent modernisation, the chance for most Chinese students to spend any time overseas, or even away from their hometown is still little more than a dream. A lack of quality English language text books and the fact that international travel is very difficult for the Chinese, means the chance to learn from a native English speaker is an exciting prospect.

Teaching and Projects AbroadWorking in Secondary schools in Wujiang, a group of towns within Jiangsu province around three hours from Shanghai, Projects Abroad volunteers are needed to improve the conversational skills of school students. Traditional values are still important in China so teachers are well respected and you will find students excited to learn. Class sizes vary between 30 and 40 students and you will be teaching students aged from 12 to 18 years.

With competition for university places high and fewer opportunities for students outside of the main cities, you will be in demand from both the students and English teachers! Basing lessons on topics within the local curriculum, you can use role-plays, debates and games to encourage the students to speak and develop their vocabulary. You will be allocated a placement supervisor and at all times you will have the full support and back up of our local staff and office as well as our UK Office.

Living and teaching in Wujiang will also give you the opportunity to experience Chinese culture, live with a local family and discover more about this huge and ancient country. Excellently placed for a weekend trip to the picturesque town of Suzhou or to visit the bright lights of Shanghai, a placement in Wujiang is a great way to enjoy and learn more about China.

Teaching and Projects AbroadOur users say...

"While I was in China the local mayor taught me Tai-Chi - awesome! I joined in at the school’s Art Festival and did a couple of things like a quiz on stage. I also played the piano, acted in a play and did Kung Fu. I planned to study Computer Science at university, but I changed my mind and am going to study ‘Chinese languages and Cultures’ instead - so yeah, I had a good time!" - Michael Kemeling
