This placement would suit... anyone with an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to learn! English in Sri Lanka is a compulsory subject from grade 3 (8yrs old) all the way to GCSE (16 years old). The skills of spoken English and I.T. are the gold standard for getting a decent job in Sri Lanka and escaping from the fate of becoming one of the 25% unemployed in this beautiful yet financially hampered country. However, you quickly see from chatting with many English teachers, this dream is sometimes completely unattainable due to the limited English that is spoken even by the "experts". Teaching & Projects Abroad has an office in the capital city of Colombo. However, our placements are generally based along the southern coast of the island – working in the aftermath of the tsunami where we can. Our placements are in and around Panadura, Wadduwa, Kalutar, Hikkaduwa and Galle. All of these places are all within a few hours (at most) of our office and so local contact with our staff is easy. The volunteer's role in as a teacher is not to follow a syllabus, the English department can do that, but rather to inject a bit of life into English lessons, to improve the students’ listening and speaking skills and to give them the confidence to use the English that they've been copying down all these years! Some schools prefer volunteers to teach alongside a Sri Lankan English teacher, helping them run their classes and organising activities in English that get the kids to practice their pronunciation and listening skills. Most schools, though, will ask volunteers to take on a class either alone or with another volunteer. All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement and also have the backup of our staff in the local office and the UK office. Accommodation is with local ‘host’ families; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Sri Lankan family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Sri Lankan delights! Our users say..."All of the teachers and children were so kind…I absolutely loved the whole experience, it was amazing and I would recommend it to anyone. The TPA staff were extremely helpful and accommodating and everyone I met was just fabulous." - Kate Finlay
